The client required a gas export route for the York Field, one of the largest undeveloped gas fields in the Southern North Sea. A conventional subsea pipeline laid to the nearest onshore was expensive and carried significant technical and cost risk due to the shore approach conditions. The BP 36” SNSPS pipeline transected the development site and the challenge was to develop a cost effective tie-in solution that was not dependent on a conventional welded tee approach. The project posed a number of key tests; introduction of a new technology to the North Sea, depth of pipeline burial, seabed mobility and tidal influences.
The CWS scope included material selection, corrosion assessments, foundation assessment, design of cofferdam and structure and design of manifold. The CWS design solution was built on previous experience of Southern North Sea projects and the use of a novel cofferdam / structural arrangement - utilising the cofferdam as a foundation for the overtrawlable protection structure. The integrated design provided a safe working chamber for the divers and optimised the on bottom stability of the protection structure.
